How to play high D on the recorder
The fingering for high D on a soprano (descant) recorder, with baroque fingering: Thumb off the back hole, and only the left middle finger on hole 2.
high D
Thumb hole open, hole 2 covered
How to play it
- High D is the first note with the thumb hole open: lift the thumb just off it.
- With so few fingers down, hold the recorder steady with your right thumb underneath and your lips.
Why it squeaks or sounds wrong
- If you hear high C, the thumb is still covering the back hole.
- If the recorder wobbles, support it with the right thumb between holes 4 and 5.
Free, in your browser: it listens as you play and shows which finger to fix.
