How to play low D on the recorder
The fingering for low D on a soprano (descant) recorder, with baroque fingering: Left hand: thumb and holes 1, 2 and 3. Right hand: pointer, middle and ring fingers on holes 4, 5 and 6.
low D
Thumb hole covered, holes 1 2 3 4 5 6 covered
How to play it
- Low D is the lowest note here, with almost every hole covered, so it's the hardest to make sound cleanly.
- Use your gentlest breath of all, and make sure all seven holes are sealed.
Why it squeaks or sounds wrong
- If it squeaks, one hole is leaking: usually hole 6 (the right ring finger) or the thumb.
- If it sounds like the note above, blow even more softly.
Free, in your browser: it listens as you play and shows which finger to fix.
