How to play G# on the recorder
The fingering for G# on a soprano (descant) recorder, with baroque fingering: Left thumb and holes 1 and 2, hole 3 open, the right pointer and middle fingers on holes 4 and 5, and one of the two small holes of hole 6.
On German-fingering recorders, this note's fingering varies from maker to maker: check the chart that came with your recorder.
⭐ This half-hole note isn't in the free Recorder Hero lessons: it's in the premium lesson Half-holes & sharps. See the song pack ›
Thumb hole covered, holes 1 2 4 5 covered, half of hole 6 covered (one of its two small holes)
How to play it
- G# (G sharp, the same as A flat) is a forked fingering: hole 3 stays open between covered holes, with half of hole 6 covered.
- On some recorders it also sounds without the half hole: listen, and keep the version that's in tune.
Why it squeaks or sounds wrong
- If you hear G, hole 3 is covered: lift your left ring finger.
- If it sounds sharp or squeaky, check that holes 4 and 5 are fully sealed.
Free, in your browser: it listens as you play and shows which finger to fix.
