How to play high E♭ on the recorder
The fingering for high E♭ on a soprano (descant) recorder, with baroque fingering: Thumb hole and hole 1 open; the left middle and ring fingers on holes 2 and 3, and the right pointer, middle and ring fingers on holes 4, 5 and 6. Hole 7 is open.
Very high notes can need a slightly different fingering from one recorder to another: if it sounds out of tune, check the chart that came with your recorder.

Thumb hole open, holes 2 3 4 5 6 covered
How to play it
- High E♭ (E flat, the same as D sharp) starts from high D: keep the thumb off and your left middle finger on hole 2, then cover holes 3, 4, 5 and 6.
- There's no pinched thumb here: the open thumb hole and hole 1 make the note high. Blow firmly and steadily.
Why it squeaks or sounds wrong
- If you hear a much lower note, the thumb or the hole 1 finger is covering a hole that should be open.
- If it squeaks or won't sound, a hole is leaking: seal holes 2 to 6 completely.
Free, in your browser: it listens as you play and shows which finger to fix.
